## DRIVING THE DAY
**THE DIPLOMAT:** It’s the biggest week for diplomacy of 2026. We’ve got the first U.S. presidential trip to China in almost a decade, a major inflection point in the Iran war, and a temporary “ceasefire” in Ukraine, with **Vladimir Putin** casually suggesting the war is coming to an end.
**In just over 48 hours**, Trump will depart D.C. to meet Chinese President **Xi Jinping** on what’s expected to be Trump’s highest-profile overseas trip this year. Any meeting between the world’s two most powerful men is of course a big moment — but this one has added spice as the first U.S. state visit to China since Trump last went in 2017.
**And boy, is the White House excited:** “They are rolling out the red carpets for Trump. There’s going to be a lot of pomp and circumstance,” a senior White House official tells Dasha. “If you look back to the first term, the China trip was the foreign trip that had the most spectacle involved in it, and they’re trying to outdo themselves.”
**Counterpoint:** American motorists paying [***44 percent more for their gas***](https://gasprices.aaa.com/) than this time last year *may* be less transfixed by the red-carpet pictures. We’ll have to see.
**Times flies:** It’s been more than six months since Trump and Xi last met, at a pan-Asian summit in South Korea — but so much has changed since then. First, Trump’s tariff powers were struck down by the Supreme Court in February; then two weeks later he launched the war with Iran. Trump actually postponed this trip from its original date in April to focus on the war.
**The stakes:** The war is the biggest issue hanging over this summit — particularly as expectations for trade talks are low. This week’s conversation will be about “keeping the status quo,” POLITICO’s **Daniel Desrochers** messages Playbook to say. Expect some hyped-up announcements on a new board of trade and Chinese purchases of U.S. agriculture and aerospace. And plenty of chatter about AI.
**But the issue unsettling America’s allies** is Taiwan, [POLITICO’s Phelim Kine and Megan Messerly report today](https://www.politico.com/news/2026/05/11/trump-xi-taiwan-crisis-00911593). Xi wants Trump to shift America’s carefully worded position of ambiguity to one of outright opposition to Taiwanese independence. And there’s some fear he might just do it. “Trump is Trump — off script all the time,” one Asian diplomat tells them. “Let’s pray nothing disastrous happens.”
**Quid pro quo?** “We’re concerned that Beijing may offer to broker a deal with Iran that would re-open the Hormuz Strait in exchange for U.S. concessions on Taiwan,” a second Washington-based Asian diplomat tells Phelim and Megan. A person close to the White House adds: “The thing about selling out Taiwan in terms of Trump is there’s really no consequence for him.”
