[...] The United Arab Emirates said Iran fired more than a dozen missiles and drones in its direction today, the AP’s Fatma Khaled reported. An Iranian drone sparked a fire at an oil facility, officials in the Fujairah emirate said. Tehran also declared a “new maritime control area” in the strait, according to the semiofficial Tasnim News Agency, though Reuters reported it wasn’t clear if the new area was a change from the status quo.

And Iranian state media claimed this morning that Tehran had struck a U.S. warship, a claim U.S. officials said on X was false. [...] The U.S. military upped activities in the strait today, after Trump announced Sunday that a new “Project Freedom” would help countries whose shipping vessels are stuck in the waterway following the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Adm. BRAD COOPER, head of U.S. Central Command, said today that two American-flagged vessels traversed the waterway “as a first step.” That didn’t come easy. Cooper also said that American military helicopters sank six small boats that had been targeting shipping vessels in the shipping lane, as our own Paul McLeary, Jack Detsch and Cheyanne M. Daniels report.

The U.S. strikes are “threatening to upend a fragile ceasefire,” our colleagues write.

At the same time, Iran has taken its own moves to project new power in the waterway.
