The Federal Emergency Management Agency will review the state's disaster declaration request and advise the president on whether to grant it.

Gretchen Whitmer asked President Donald Trump on Wednesday to declare a major disaster in three southwest Michigan counties in the wake of [tornadoes that resulted in four deaths](https://www.detroitnews.com/story/weather/2026/03/08/what-we-know-about-the-deadly-tornadoes-that-hit-michigan/89052666007/), multiple injuries and significant property damage.  
  
If the request is granted, the area could qualify for federal individual assistance grants to help with home repairs, temporary housing and other recovery costs.  
  
"I declared a state of emergency, but our work is just beginning," Whitmer said in a statement Wednesday. "As we wrap our arms around the affected communities, we are requesting federal assistance to ensure those affected have the resources they need to recover. Let’s keep working together to keep people safe and help Michiganders rebuild.”

Officials established that across the three counties, 33 homes were destroyed, 74 sustained major damage and 207 had minor damage, Whitmer said in her letter. About 100 households may qualify for temporary housing assistance, 67 for housing repair assistance and eight for housing replacement aid. But those numbers may "severely underestimate" the impact on individuals and houses, Whitmer wrote.  
  
The letter estimated the counties needed about $1.4 million in federal individual and housing aid grants, including roughly $201,000 for temporary housing assistance, $497,000 for repair assistance, $385,000

Thousands of people in California have warned to "keep windows and doors closed" as air pollution reaches "harmful" levels.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said in an air quality alert that parts of the [Coachella Valley and Imperial County](https://www.newsweek.com/california-warned-stay-inside-emergency-conditions-11766982) would be impacted by the pollution from Wednesday evening until Thursday night.

The NWS warned that particle pollution can get deep into people's lungs, causing serious health problems including asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections.

"Everyone can be affected, but sensitive groups such as people with lung or heart disease, older adults, people who are pregnant, children, and those who spend a lot of time outdoors are at greater risk," it said.

People in impacted areas should take steps to minimize their exposure to pollution by limiting the length and intensity of outdoor activities, slowing down when driving on dirt tracks, and reducing the number of trips made with vehicles, the NWS said.

## Why were deaths lower than expected?

The UKHSA says it is possible that warmer conditions in late spring 2025 may have encouraged people to adopt earlier "protective" behaviours ahead of the peak heat.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, said the lower-than-expected deaths "suggests that the actions taken across the health and care system may be helping to reduce harm".

However, he warned that continued vigilance is needed "as periods of heat become more intense, longer and more frequent".

"Coordinated preparation and response remain essential to protect the most vulnerable in our society".

## Who is most at risk?

Heat can affect anyone, but some vulnerable groups, like older people and babies, run a greater risk of serious harm.

As in previous years, the highest heat-associated mortality rates were seen in older age groups - the 75s and over.

Old age and some long-term conditions, such as heart disease, can leave people less able to cope with the strain heat puts on the body.

During hot weather, it can be easy to overheat, sometimes resulting in heat exhaustion or [heatstroke](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckgl51jjp3jo).

## What is the forecast for 2026?

The Met Office outlook for the global average temperature in 2026 suggests it will be over 1.46C, which would put it at one of the fourth warmest on record.

While there are no localised UK figures for the year ahead, the winter season has been relatively mild.

Oil prices climbed after Donald Trump’s [address to the nation](https://www.ft.com/content/3af1d6e5-2a61-47f9-af65-efeb1b859ab9?syn-25a6b1a6=1) on Wednesday night, in which he reiterated the prospect of an escalation in the war against Iran.

The price for Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose about 5 per cent in early Asia trading to $106 a barrel.

The US president told the “countries of the world” grappling with the global energy crisis triggered by war that it would be up to them to break the Islamic republic’s chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile consumers across the US are confronting surging prices at the pump. Petrol has reached $4 per gallon on average this week.

States such as California, which is heavily reliant on imports, have been hit particularly hard, as my colleagues Stephanie Findlay, Christopher Grimes, Ryohtaroh Satoh and I [dived into](https://www.ft.com/content/01b4ae28-0f13-4a32-90ef-afc4dc095cfc?syn-25a6b1a6=1) on Tuesday.
