A drastic weather pattern change is about to induce an acute case of weather whiplash for most of the country. During the next few days, a record-setting Western heat wave will settle in while winterlike cold returns to the East.

The heat wave in the West will dominate weather headlines for at least two weeks starting Thursday, as numerous locations are likely to set all-time heat records for the month of March.

The heat will melt the West’s already [well-below-average snowpack](https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/09/climate/snow-drought-west-water-colorado-river), raising concerns for spring and summer water resources and a potentially severe wildfire season. The heat all but assures that Colorado and Utah will have their lowest snowpack on record.

Cities that saw high temperatures in the 70s and 80s this week are likely to see highs in the 30s and 40s next week.

Washington, DC, saw a high temperature of 84 degrees on Tuesday, but will drop into the 50s this weekend, and fall into the 40s early next week. Temperatures climbed into the 70s in parts of the Northeast on Tuesday, but multiple chances of more snow are back in the forecast there during the next five to seven days.

Climate change increases the likelihood, duration, and severity of heat waves, and likely played a role in clinching the title for the West’s hottest winter.

In addition, seasonal timing is shifting as the world warms. Across much of the US, winter is the fastest-warming season, and spring is also coming earlier in many areas with the last freeze happening sooner.

A record-breaking [heat dome](https://x.com/WeatherProf/status/2031813036592201848?s=20) will develop near the West Coast late this week, smashing records and sending temperatures into the triple digits through next week — when it will feel like summer during the final days of winter.

This follows the [warmest start to March on record](https://x.com/BenNollWeather/status/2031871512534532242?s=20) for the United States.

There are many potential firsts for March on the horizon: It could reach 100 degrees in Los Angeles next week, after record-breaking 95-degree heat on Thursday and Friday. In Phoenix next week, temperatures could exceed 100 degrees several times. It could also reach the century mark in Las Vegas.

The pattern is occurring as a marine heat wave builds offshore, an expansive area of well above-average sea temperatures that will likely expand as summer-like warmth arrives and intensifies into next week — following a meteorological winter with [widespread record-breaking warmth](https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2026/03/01/winter-ending-spring-more-snow-ice/) and [snow droughts](https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/interactive/2026/see-places-that-have-gotten-most-least-snow-this-winter/?itid=sf_weather_article-list_1_9) in the West.

“I’d say the pattern next week would be the nail in the coffin of a very unforgettable winter season,” said assistant Utah state climatologist Jon Meyer, who was “quite pessimistic” about the potential impacts on the state’s water supply and drought conditions.

## Why Power Outages Are Spiking

Although Power Outage doesn't confirm the specific cause of an individual power outage, utility providers across the U.S. routinely cite severe weather as one of the leading causes of large‑scale outages, and the recent severe winter weather—including high winds, heavy rain, snow, ice and tornadoes—is likely to be the cause of these widespread power outages.

In some regions, though, outages may also stem from equipment failures, vehicle collisions with utility infrastructure or planned safety shutoffs designed to reduce wildfire risk.

Several U.S. states are experiencing widespread power outages as of March 12, according to real‑time data compiled by Power Outage, one of the nation's most widely used outage-tracking platforms.

## Power Outage Update

As of Thursday at 4:30 a.m. Eastern time, Power Outage reported more than 270,000 customers without electricity nationwide. Outages are [concentrated in a handful of states](https://www.newsweek.com/map-us-counties-blackout-electricity-power-outage-vulnerability-2113927) where tens of thousands of homes and businesses remain in the dark.

## States With the Highest Number of Power Outages

At the time of publication, Washington state had the largest number of customers without power, with more than 92,000 outages reported.

Mississippi followed with just over 53,000 customers without electricity, while Louisiana reported more than 30,000 outages.

Other states experiencing significant disruptions included Idaho—with over 21,000 outages—and Alabama, where almost 19,000 customers have been affected by a loss of power.

At a county level, outages were highly concentrated, particularly in areas served by utilities facing storm‑related damage or localized equipment failures. In Washington, several counties—including King, Kitsap, Pierce, Skagit and Snohomish—accounted for large shares of the state's total outage, reflecting widespread regional impacts rather than isolated incidents.
