JAISALMER: Rajiv K. Sahni, Director General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (DG EME) and Colonel Commandant of the Corps of EME of the Indian Army, visited formations and EME units of the Konark Corps during his tour of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur in western Rajasthan on Monday.During the visit, the senior officer reviewed the operational and technical preparedness of units stationed in Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and other areas of the desert sector.Lt Gen Sahni assessed the maintenance, repair and engineering support systems that ensure the operational readiness of combat platforms and other critical military equipment deployed in the region. He also interacted with officers, engineers and technical staff of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers and reviewed several ongoing innovation projects.

# Indian rupee, bonds to remain under pressure amid escalating Mideast conflict

MUMBAI, March 9 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee and government bonds are expected to remain under pressure this week, as the deepening conflict in the Middle East clouds the growth and inflation outlooks worldwide and keeps investors risk-averse.

The U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran ​has entered its second week, with the war rattling [businesses](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/us-israel-war-with-iran-sends-shockwaves-through-global-business-2026-03-06/) worldwide and driving up energy prices.

India is one of ‌the largest importers of oil, and rising oil prices affect the nation's inflation and current account deficit. Brent crude oil prices nearly hit $95 per barrel on Friday and are up over 25% this month.

The rupee hit a record low last week, prompting the Reserve Bank of India to intervene and help the currency ​recover north of the 92-per-dollar mark even as it logged its steepest weekly fall in a month.

If oil prices continue ​to rise, however, the rupee could fall towards the 92.50 mark, traders reckon, sparking a fresh round of ⁠pressure as importers rush in to lock hedges and exporters hesitate.

"Exporters have been holding back as recent hedges are suffering notional losses ​and they are uncertain how much further the rupee could weaken from here," an FX salesperson at a large U.S.-based bank said.

The rupee, ​though, has fared better than some of its emerging-market peers, such as the Korean won and Brazilian real.

The relative resilience of the rupee is consistent with the tight central bank management, analysts at Goldman Sachs said in a note. "But the longer this shock persists, the less sustainable these policies would become."

Meanwhile, data ​released on Friday showed that the U.S. economy [unexpectedly shed](https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-nonfarm-payrolls-decline-february-unemployment-rate-rises-44-2026-03-06/) 92,000 jobs last month, which modestly dented the dollar, which otherwise has been supported ​by a rush for safe-haven assets.

## BONDS

The benchmark 10-year yield ended at 6.6898% on Friday, up 3 basis points for the week, despite heavy purchases by ‌an investor ⁠group comprising the RBI, as a war-triggered spike in oil prices eroded investor confidence.

Traders anticipate the yield to move in a 6.65%-6.75% range this week, with the primary driver being the move in oil prices.

The RBI will purchase bonds worth 1 trillion rupees ($10.88 billion) this week, in two tranches of 500 billion rupees each on Monday and Friday.

The "Others" category of investors, which comprises marquee participants such as insurance companies, ​pension funds, and corporates, net bought ​bonds worth 581 billion rupees ⁠in the week ended March 6, the biggest ever buying.

# Roy Wood Jr. Uses Words Of Marjorie Taylor Greene To Inspire Unwitting Crowd In Politically Charged WGA Awards Opening: “You All Are Being Incited Into Civil War”

Roy Wood Jr. used the words of former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to inspire the crowd at the 78th annual Writers Guild Awards on Sunday night, much to their surprise. As he spoke, he cited some of the more obnoxious illustrations of the declining state of the media industry as of late, including Amazon’s $75M spend on Melania, the recent pivot by streamers to “video podcasts” as talk shows flounder, and the turmoil at CBS News since Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison tapped Bari Weiss to lead the news organization.

“That same great philosopher also told us, both sides need to take off their political blinders. You all are being incited into civil war, yet none of it solves any of the real problems we all face,” he added later in his speech.

“So with that, I urge all of you to continue to make an original content that challenges the human mind pushes back on conventional ideals, because our government understands one thing clearly. If you control what people see, then you control how the country sees itself. If you can do that, you don’t even need to rig an election,” he told the writers in front of him. “So the journalists, the writers, the entertainers in this room just know that we’re Ground Zero. We’re fighting the fight. Keep telling the truth and keep pushing because, lastly, that philosopher also told us it was all a lie. It was a big lie for the people.

And I think we can all agree with that person’s great words, and we can all agree that we cannot leave telling the truth solely to Marjorie Taylor Greene,” he concluded.

Also throughout his speech, Wood Jr. alluded to the pending acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance, joking that most people probably know him from “being Black on *The Daily Show*,” but he’s chosen to leave that gig and go to CNN to avoid the instability that was sure to come from the then-pending merger between Paramount and Comedy Central.

“They don’t want to just control messaging domestically. They want to control messaging overseas. Our government has shown a willingness to go into places and replace them with people willing to do the bidding of this administration,” he said. “We saw it in Venezuela. We’re seeing it now in Iran. Before both of those, we saw it at CBS.”

As the audience chuckled, Wood Jr. then took a moment to assure any CBS News writers (who are members of the WGA East) in the crowd could comfortably laugh at his punch line, whispering, “*she’s* not here.”
