A California college student found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting several women made a mad dash for freedom while being escorted out of the courtroom.
Arian Eteghaei, 23, a former student at University of California, Santa Barbara, tried to make his escape just moments after a jury found him guilty Friday on three counts of sexual assault involving five women and battery against a sixth.
As deputies fastened handcuffs on Eteghaei and began leading him from the courtroom to a secure holding area, he attempted to flee and sprinted toward State Street in downtown Santa Barbara. [...] A bailiff lunged to grab Eteghaei but struggled to restrain him until a second officer rushed over. Two bystanders also stepped in, helping the bailiffs pin Eteghaei to the ground.

### Article Body
Here’s what’s moving today.
United States — Courtroom chaos in Santa Barbara: Moments after a jury convicted former UC Santa Barbara student Arian Eteghaei on multiple sexual assault counts, he attempted to bolt from custody while being escorted from the courtroom, according to the New York Post. Court officers and bystanders subdued him outside as he tried to sprint toward State Street, and the sheriff’s office confirmed the escape attempt occurred during transport between the court and a secure area [[1]](https://nypost.com/2026/01/21/us-news/college-student-makes-a-break-for-it-after-rape-conviction/).
Australia — PhD student charged over alleged Australia Day plot: A Brisbane‑based doctoral student has been charged in connection with an alleged plan tied to Australia Day. In court, his lawyer said he became socially isolated and emotionally overwhelmed while consuming geopolitical content, and that he sought to “make national news,” Sky News Australia reports. The matter has been adjourned until February 20 [[2]](https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/crime/brisbanebased-phd-student-charged-over-alleged-australia-day-terror-plot/news-story/0cc85aee11501c0aff9e4f84f5691447).
Finance & tech — Bermuda targets an onchain economy: Positioning itself as a digital‑assets hub, Bermuda has set its sights on expanding an “onchain economy,” continuing its bid to attract fintech and Web3 firms with regulatory clarity, per Finextra’s coverage [[3]](https://www.finextra.com/newsarticle/47172/bermuda-targets-onchain-economy).
Why it matters: Today’s docket underscores a split screen of public‑safety flashpoints and digital‑policy ambition—courtroom security and counter‑terror charges on one side; jurisdictional competition for next‑gen finance on the other. Watch for how courts, law enforcement, and regulators calibrate deterrence and oversight as 2026 unfolds.
