# 2025 produced 23 weather-related billion-dollar disasters in the U.S. — without any hurricanes

Despite avoiding a [landfall by a major hurricane last year,](https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-weather/hurricanes/article/hurricane-season-ends-with-no-us-landfalls-21102576.php) the United States still endured 23 weather-related disasters that caused at least a $1 billion in damage costs in 2025.

The total underscores how costly extreme weather has become, even in the absence of the storms that have historically caused the most damage. Floods, severe storms, wildfires, drought, and other climate-driven events combined to produce tens of billions of dollars in losses nationwide.

That long-term trend is nowhere clearer than in Texas, which has recorded [190 weather-related billion-dollar disasters](https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-weather/forecast/article/texas-billion-dollar-disasters-record-2023-18601230.php) since 1980 — surpassing any other state since tracking began.

The updated national tally [comes from Climate Central](https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-services/billion-dollar-disasters), a climate research nonprofit that is managing the long-running disaster database originally developed by the National Centers for Environmental Information. The [database was suspended last year as part of the Trump White House’s cuts](https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-weather/article/fema-congress-noaa-disaster-database-texas-20318937.php) to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the NCEI’s parent agency. The analysis tracks the most expensive U.S. weather and climate events, adjusting costs for inflation to allow fair comparisons across decades.

## Weather-related billion-dollar disasters

Hurricanes have [traditionally dominated the list](https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-weather/hurricanes/article/texas-peak-activity-hurricane-season-forecast-21038531.php) of the costliest U.S. disasters, often accounting for the biggest losses in any given year. The total cost of tropical cyclones alone accounts for more than half of all billion-dollar weather and climate disaster losses in Texas.

Instead of one or two catastrophic storms driving the total in 2025, damage costs accumulated through a steady succession of devastating events, ranging from January’s drought and wildfires in Southern California to July’s hail and flooding in Central Texas.

One clear trend that emerges is that billion-dollar disasters are no longer tied to a single hazard or season, but are increasingly spread across the calendar and the country.

## Extreme weather costs pile up

Heavy rainfall events triggered costly floods, while severe storms brought destructive winds, hail, and tornadoes. In the West, longer and more intense wildfire seasons continued to drive up suppression costs and property losses. [Drought conditions added pressure](https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-weather/article/houston-record-fall-heat-worsening-drought-21102580.php) on agriculture, reducing crop yields and increasing economic strain in farming regions.

The effects of climate change, including a rise in global temperatures, can intensify several of these hazards — increasing the likelihood of extreme rainfall in a city like Houston, lengthening wildfire seasons, and worsening drought conditions in more arid parts of the country.

Meanwhile, rising sea levels raise the stakes for coastal flooding, even in years without hurricane landfalls, particularly along the upper Texas Gulf Coast where subsidence, or sinking, of the coast is occurring at a rate of up to [2 inches per year](https://www.nature.com/articles/s44284-025-00240-y) in some locations.

“The next few nights are forecast to be very cold for much of the Central and Eastern United States,” the Weather Prediction Center, part of the National Weather Service, said Saturday. “Sub-zero wind chills are forecast from the Plains to the Midwest and Northeast, with the coldest wind chills expected in the Upper Midwest on Sunday night.”

Snowfall was expected by Sunday night to blanket Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with some areas getting up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow. [...] In January 2025, up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow fell in parts of the Florida Panhandle. This snowfall was part of a record breaking snowstorm that impacted the deep South in late January 2025, according to the National Weather Service. Areas that don’t normally see snowfall, including Houston, New Orleans and parts of Florida, were hit by last year’s winter storm.

“On average we have an event like this maybe every few years. But having two, back to back, I’d say is pretty anomalous for the area,” Oliver said.

Up to 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) of snow is expected to fall on Sunday morning in parts of central Georgia, areas located south of Atlanta. The heavier snowfall is expected to take place between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. ET on Sunday. [...] The cold weather wasn’t going to be limited to the northern parts of the U.S. as Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida were expected to have near freezing temperatures through at least the weekend.

In Tallahassee, Florida, residents could see some snowfall on Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service. But if there is snow, it won’t last long.

“So here in Tallahassee, the likelihood of any snow accumulation is not zero, but it’s very low. I mean, the ground will be just too warm for anything to stick and accumulate,” said Kristian Oliver, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s office in Tallahassee.

If there is snowfall in the Tallahassee area on Sunday, it would be the second time in as many years that Florida has experienced such winter weather.

# Blast of winter weather hitting Midwest, East Coast and could bring snow to Florida

HOUSTON (AP) — A blast of winter weather was set to bring snowfall and subfreezing wind chills across the Midwest and East Coast on Saturday as well as near freezing temperatures in parts of the South, including in normally warm Florida. # Blast of winter weather hitting Midwest, East Coast and could bring snow to Florida

HOUSTON (AP) — A blast of winter weather was set to bring snowfall and subfreezing wind chills across the Midwest and East Coast on Saturday as well as near freezing temperatures in parts of the South, including in normally warm Florida.

In northeastern Ohio, a snow squall — sudden bursts of heavy snow and gusty winds — was creating whiteout conditions, according to the National Weather Service. The snow squall conditions were moving into the Cleveland metro area on Saturday and expected to continue east into Pennsylvania and parts of eastern New York.

“Expect visibilities of less than a quarter of a mile and rapid snow accumulation on roadways. Travel will be difficult and possibly dangerous in the heavy snow,” according to the National Weather Service.

Snowfall was expected by Sunday night to blanket Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with some areas getting up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow.

The cold weather wasn’t going to be limited to the northern parts of the U.S. as Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida were expected to have near freezing temperatures through at least the weekend.

In Tallahassee, Florida, residents could see some snowfall on Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service. But if there is snow, it won’t last long.

“So here in Tallahassee, the likelihood of any snow accumulation is not zero, but it’s very low. I mean, the ground will be just too warm for anything to stick and accumulate,” said Kristian Oliver, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s office in Tallahassee.

If there is snowfall in the Tallahassee area on Sunday, it would be the second time in as many years that Florida has experienced such winter weather.
