Winter storm warnings are in effect for four U.S. states, as up to 24 inches of [snow](/topic/snow) is expected to impact parts of the nation, primarily from Wednesday through Thursday, according to the National [Weather](/topic/weather) Service (NWS).

## States Affected by Winter Storm Warnings

The states of [Oregon](/topic/oregon), [Washington](/topic/washington), [Idaho](/topic/idaho), and [Alaska](/topic/alaska) are expected to be the most affected by the latest winter storm warnings, as the NWS warns that “[travel may be very difficult to impossible](https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=Winter%20Storm%20Warning),” but if it's unavoidable, “[drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden](https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=Winter%20Storm%20Warning)

### Oregon

Areas above 2,000 feet in the Douglas County Cascade foothills—including Toketee Falls and Highway 138—could get up to 8 inches of snow from Wednesday afternoon, into Thursday morning.

The southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains—including Crescent Lake, Diamond Lake, Union Creek, and Howard Prairie—should prepare for between 8 and 24 inches of snow and winds as high as 45 mph, particularly across high or exposed areas, overnight Tuesday, through Wednesday, lasting until Thursday morning. The NWS has also warned that road closures might be possible.

The northern and central Cascades of Oregon could see up to 5 feet of snow in areas above 5,000 feet with winds as high as 45 mph, until Thursday afternoon.

Up to 20 inches of snow and 50 mph winds are forecast to hit the eastern slopes of the Oregon Cascades, and up to 18 inches of snow and 45 mph winds could blast the northern Blue Mountains of Oregon, lasting until Thursday afternoon.

### Washington

Stevens Pass, Stehekin, and Holden Village have been advised to expect between 7 inches and 2 feet of snow, accompanied by 40mph wind gusts, until Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, Peola, Mountain Road, Anatone, and Cloverland Road are expected to receive up to 11 inches of snow, with 45 mph winds, lasting until Wednesday morning.

The upper slopes of the eastern Washington Cascades Crest could see up to 20 inches of snow and 50 mph winds, and the lower slopes up to 10 inches of snow and 45 mph winds until Thursday afternoon. The south Washington Cascades could get between 1 and 3 feet of snow and 45 mph winds in areas above 5,000 feet, also by Thursday afternoon.

# US lightning strikes reach new eight-year high in 2025

[Lightning strikes are always a serious threat](https://nypost.com/2025/08/19/us-news/rare-triple-lightning-strike-illuminates-skies-over-chicago/), no matter what season it is. For the last year, lightning strikes in the US have reached an 8-year-high, according to Vaisala Xweather.

Xweather operates the world’s definitive lightning-detection infrastructure, capable of recording 99% of thunderstorms worldwide and detecting over two billion lightning events.

In a recent report, Vaisala Xweather said that approximately 250 million lightning strikes occurred in 2025, a 20% increase from 2024.

The most active day in 2025 was April 5, when 157 severe storms, including 21 tornadoes in the Southeast, produced more than three million lightning events, according to Vaisala Xweather.

The state with the most lightning activity last year was Texas, with 47 million events. The state with the fewest lightning strikes was Rhode Island, with just 8,000 events.

Although Shady Grove, Oklahoma, holds the title of US lightning capital, with 1,160 recorded events, according to Vaisala Xweather, Texas and Florida have been at the top of the list over the past few years.

According to NASA, lightning is an electrical discharge in the atmosphere that can occur between clouds, the ground or in the air itself. Thunder occurs when lightning passes through the air, heating it quickly. This causes the air to expand rapidly and create the sound wave we hear as thunder.

Lightning can happen between two opposite charges within a thunderstorm cloud or between opposite charges in the cloud or on the ground, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

About 25 million cloud-to-ground [lightning strikes](https://nypost.com/2025/08/16/us-news/long-islander-captures-video-of-incredibly-insane-lightning-outside-his-home/) occur in the US every year, according to the NWS. Over the last 30 years, the U.S. has averaged 51 lightning deaths per year.

“Most lightning victims are not struck during the worst of a thunderstorm, but rather before or after the storm reaches its greatest intensity,” a statement from the NWS reads.

## Where to go during a thunderstorm

According to the NWS, the safest location during a thunderstorm is an enclosed structure with plumbing and electrical wiring. These include shopping centers, schools, office buildings and private residences.

Millions of people living on the expanding outskirts of Australia’s major cities face an increasing risk of urban wildfires similar to the deadly blazes in Los Angeles last year.

Suburbs on the fringes of centers including Sydney, Melbourne and Perth now house at least 6.9 million inhabitants and, like regions impacted in LA, have residential areas where homes adjoin highly flammable grasslands, [according to a report](https://www.climatecouncil.org.au/resources/when-cities-burn-could-the-los-angeles-fires-happen-here/) published Tuesday by the Climate Council think tank and a group of former Australian fire chiefs.

“Nearly every Australian capital city has a dangerous mix of preconditions for a catastrophic fire like LA — the possibility of extreme dry periods, severe winds, steep slopes, bushland near homes and a history of destructive fires,” said [Greg Mullins](https://emergencyleadersforclimateaction.org.au/who-we-are/), a former New South Wales Fire Commissioner who has also worked with authorities in the US.

Blazes in January 2025 in Los Angeles County [killed 31 people](https://www.bu.edu/sph/news/articles/2025/death-count-for-2025-la-county-wildfires-likely-hundreds-higher-than-official-records-show/#:~:text=Official%20California%20records%20indicate%20that,is%20nearly%2015%20times%20higher.) and rank as the world’s costliest wildfires, with estimated insured losses of $40 billion, [according to Swiss Re](https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/international/2025/08/06/834711.htm). Factors that contributed to the devastation — erratic weather fueled by the impacts of climate change, and the expansion of new homes near the urban fringe — are also in place across Australia, the Climate Council report said.

Australian authorities need to act faster to phase out polluting fossil fuels and also lift investment in disaster preparation and resilience, according to the report. The country has a long history of deadly wildfires, and the 2019-2020 Black Summer blazes killed 33 people and burned through 24 million hectares (59 million acres).

The strongest wind gusts were recorded in Boulder County around 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Red Flag Warnings will remain in place in the Foothills through 5 p.m. Tuesday as relative humidity drops, and winds gust at times as high as 50+ mph.

With dry conditions along the Front Range, rapid fire spread is possible.

Elsewhere across the plains, humidity levels will be just above Red Flag criteria, but gusty winds will be present across the plains as well.

Wind speeds will relax this evening.
