South Carolina’s wildfire season typically peaks in late winter and early spring due to a lack of rainfall and dry vegetation, and that was certainly the case in 2025. [...] Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall on July 6 near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, but much of the July 4 holiday period was considered a washout due to passing rain showers and dangerous rip currents.

The highest reported wind gust in the Palmetto State was 56 mph, but it was the torrential rainfall that caused most of the problems.

Overall, the storm was responsible for six deaths in neighboring North Carolina, with regional damage estimates totaling around $500 million.

The influence of a La Niña pattern led to a rollercoaster year of weather across South Carolina, marked by sharp swings.

The year started off snowy with record amounts of precipitation along the coast, only to finish with a holiday heat wave as temperatures neared record highs.

An unusual tropical cyclone season resulted in no hurricane threats for the Eastern Seaboard, but the Palmetto State was the only region to see a direct strike by a named storm.

Perhaps the most prolonged and consequential weather story of the year was the persistent drought.

Conditions ebbed and flowed throughout the year, setting the stage for deteriorating crop conditions and wildfire activity.

Among the most notable events were the following weather stories that defined South Carolina’s climate.

## 1. January snowstorms

January was an exceptionally snowy month for the U.S., with frozen precipitation extending all the way south to the Gulf Coast and the East Coast.

The Palmetto State experienced two winter weather events, though not every location saw record-breaking snowfall.

A storm system from Jan. 10-11 produced snow in the higher elevations and along the South Carolina-North Carolina state line, while a system later in the month produced record-breaking snowfall along the coast.

That’s right - coastal communities saw more snowfall than inland cities such as Columbia and even Greenville.

With the secondary system, a weather observation site in downtown Charleston reported 4 inches of snow, while some communities farther north recorded between 4 and 6 inches.

Even more impressive snowfall totals were reported along the Gulf Coast’s Interstate 10 corridor, where some communities measured more than a foot of snow, with some areas placed under Blizzard Warnings.

## 2. Spring wildfires

South Carolina’s wildfire season typically peaks in late winter and early spring due to a lack of rainfall and dry vegetation, and that was certainly the case in 2025.

Fires erupted in March from the Upstate to the Grand Strand, forcing thousands of residents from their homes.

State officials reported that the Table Rock Complex Fire burned more than 13,000 acres in the Upstate, making it the largest mountain wildfire in the state’s history.

A combination of rugged terrain and windy conditions made the fire difficult for firefighters to control after it was sparked by discarded cigarettes.

Significant fires were also reported in Horry, Georgetown, Greenville and Pickens counties, and Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency.

Despite the infernos across the state, there was not a reported loss of life, and damage to structures was minimal.

More than 41 million Americans across California, southern Nevada and northwest Arizona are under flood watches on Wednesday amid a rare, high risk for excessive rainfall and flooding.

This includes major metros like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, California, San Diego and Las Vegas.

A "High Risk for excessive rainfall" is in place for Los Angeles, including I-10 from San Bernardino to Santa Monica and areas north like Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks, I-5 to Burbank, Santa Clarita, and up to Pyramid Lake and all of I-210. Travel on these roads is not recommended as they may become flooded, officials said. Low-lying neighborhoods in these areas could also become flooded, forecasts show.

Being under a "High Risk" designation is rare. This risk is only issued about 4% of days, accounting for one-third of all flood-related fatalities and 80% of all flood-related damages, according to the NWS.

Potential flooding impacts include the threat of significant and widespread urban roadway flooding, a high risk of major rock/mudslides, and rapid rises in creeks, streams and rivers which will likely lead to swift water rescues.

The recent burn scars will be at risk of possibly damaging debris flows. These flooding impacts will likely lead to significant travel delays and road closures during the busy holiday travel period.

Winds are forecast to gust 40 to 50 mph across the area, potentially leading to power outages on Wednesday, according to forecasts. Thunderstorms are also possible.

# ‘Dangerous scenario unfolding’ in Southern California from potent storm lashing the entire state

A powerful storm carrying a strong [atmospheric river](https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/09/weather/what-is-an-atmospheric-river-xpn?cid=external-feeds_iluminar_yahoo) is laying siege to California, where evacuations have been issued because of the risk of life-threatening flooding and debris flows.

“A dangerous scenario is unfolding, with widespread and significant impacts from flash flooding and debris flows expected,” the Weather Prediction Center said about areas near and north of Los Angeles as the downpours arrived Wednesday morning.

Several flash flood warnings had already been issued in this area of most concern before 8 a.m. PT. “Local law enforcement reported heavy rain, rockslides, mudslides, and washed out roadways across the warned area,” the National Weather Service said in one warning for northwest Los Angeles and northeast Ventura counties.

Some areas in the mountains of Ventura County have already seen more than 6 inches of rain.

The Los Angeles Fire Department rescued a man trapped in a small drainage tunnel on the Los Angeles River in the Winnetka neighborhood during heavy rain Wednesday morning. Two other people in the area were also moved out of the danger zone, the department said.

Feet of mountain snow, severe thunderstorms and strong winds round out the multiple threats the state is facing.

### Rare high risk on Christmas Eve

A Level 4 of 4 “high” risk of flooding rain is in place for Southern California Wednesday, including more than 7 million people in portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, according to the Weather Prediction Center.

These high risk flooding events are incredibly significant: High risks are issued on fewer than 4% of days per year on average, but are responsible for more than 80% of all flood-related damage and [36% of all flood-related deaths](https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/eroclimo/#:~:text=High%20Risk%20Days%20typically%20occur,substantial%20mid%2Dlatitude%20storm%20systems), WPC research shows.

Evacuation warnings or orders were in place in parts of at least five Southern California counties, notably around areas recently burned by wildfires.

Rainfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour at times Wednesday. The holiday danger doesn’t end Wednesday: Another atmospheric river-fueled storm will follow Christmas Day and continue into Friday. It’s raising a Level 3 of 4 flooding rain risk for more than 12 million people, including many in Wednesday’s high risk.

All told, rainfall totals in Southern California through the end of the week could be as much as 4 to 7 inches in coastal and valley locations, while foothills and mountains see 6 to 14 inches.

To put those totals into perspective, a city like Los Angeles could see anywhere from two months’ worth of rain to nearly half a year’s worth in just a week.

### Residents not evacuating despite orders

Ventura, Santa Barbara, Orange and San Bernardino counties all issued evacuation warnings or orders for the threat of flooding by Tuesday evening. They join orders and warnings first issued on Monday by Los Angeles County for areas in and around burn scars in the greater Los Angeles area, including the Eaton and Palisades fire zones.
