# Christmas Weather Map Predicts Record-Breaking Heat Across the US

If you’re still dreaming of a white Christmas, [it’s past time to lower your expectations](https://gizmodo.com/dreaming-of-a-white-christmas-dont-hold-your-breath-2000699726). According to the latest holiday forecast, a warm air mass expanding over the south-central U.S. will bring unseasonable warmth to most states over the holiday.

This heat dome could break “numerous” high-temperature records on Christmas Day, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC) [stated](https://x.com/NWSWPC/status/2002558860557684898) on Saturday. From the Intermountain West to the Midwest, highs could reach the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit (around 10 to 20 degrees Celsius). The Southern Plains could see highs in the 80s F (about 27 to 32 C).

Those regions aren’t the only ones expecting springlike warmth over the holiday. In fact, the CPC’s temperature outlook for December 24 through 28 (pictured on the map above) shows that nearly the entire U.S.—except for the upper Northeast and northern Pacific Coast—is likely to see above-average temperatures.

A whopping 38 cities are expected to [break](https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/exper/ndfd/ndfd.html#) their all-time high temperature records on Christmas Day, including St. Louis, Missouri; Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Wichita, Kansas. Many of these records have been in place since the late 1800s.

There’s a good chance this warm spell will persist into the new year. The CPC’s temperature outlook for December 29 through January 4 continues to [show](https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/814day/814temp.new.gif) a high likelihood of above-average temperatures across most of the country, with the greatest probabilities focused on the south-central U.S.

If you feel like you’re suffering from weather whiplash, you’re probably not alone. December got off to a frigid start when a wobbly polar vortex sent [back-to-back Arctic blasts](https://gizmodo.com/winter-kicks-off-with-back-to-back-arctic-blasts-and-a-potential-bomb-cyclone-2000694160) plunging southward into the U.S. The influx of frigid air helped fuel a clipper storm that [blanketed](https://www.weather.gov/lot/2025_12_06_07_WinterStorm#:~:text=Additional%20Info-,Overview,Office%20in%20Romeoville:%202.1%22.) the upper Midwest, the Great Lakes, and parts of the Northeast in snow during the first week of the month.

Now, it appears winter is on a temporary hiatus. It’s not yet clear when temperatures will return to normal.

## The complex role of climate change

Winter warm spells like this one have become far more common due to climate change. In fact, winter is warming [faster](https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-matters/fastest-warming-seasons-2025) than any other season. Average December temperatures across the U.S. have risen 3 to 5 degrees over the past 75 years, David Robinson, New Jersey state climatologist and Rutgers University professor, recently [told](https://time.com/7340507/climate-change-snow-white-christmas/) Time Magazine.

The likelihood of seeing a white Christmas is therefore decreasing as winters become warmer, wetter, and shorter. With that said, this doesn’t mean we’re heading toward a future where it never snows or freezes. Though they may happen less frequently, climate change is also [fueling](https://science.nasa.gov/kids/earth/how-is-cold-weather-changing/) heavier snowstorms, as a warmer atmosphere is capable of holding more moisture.

With both record cold and record warmth characterizing this December, it’s clear that climate change is making weather patterns more unpredictable. For now, it looks like we’re getting a very early taste of spring, but that could soon change.

2035 Outlook: What the World Will Look Like in 10 Years, According to Science

Ten years from now is close enough that science can say something meaningful—yet far enough that politics, economics, and surprise breakthroughs can still change the storyline. So instead of a single “prediction,” the most credible way to picture 2035 is to look at what the most evidence-driven forecasts already agree on: climate physics, demographic projections, energy system trajectories, public-health risk models, and technology trendlines.

In late 2025, several major scientific and policy signals landed almost back-to-back—from the World Meteorological Organization’s warnings about persistent high warming and rising ocean heat, to the International Energy Agency’s outlook for a more electrified world, to a WHO pandemic agreement meant to prevent the next global health emergency from spiraling the way COVID-19 did. Put together, they sketch a 2035 that feels less like science fiction and more like a world that is already arriving—just amplified.

## 1) The “new normal” climate will feel less normal—and more expensive

By 2035, the average person won’t experience climate change as an abstract global statistic. They’ll experience it as a shift in the baseline: hotter seasons, more punishing heatwaves, heavier downpours in some regions, sharper drought in others, and higher climate-driven costs baked into food, insurance, and infrastructure.

Late 2025 reporting from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) pointed to continued exceptional warmth: preliminary assessments indicated 2025 was on track to rank among the warmest years ever recorded, with ocean heat continuing to climb beyond even the record levels of 2024. The ocean is where most excess heat ends up, and that matters because it can intensify storms, stress fisheries, and accelerate sea-level rise through thermal expansion. The near-term odds are also sobering. WMO’s latest decadal-style outlooks have highlighted a strong chance that multi-year average warming will temporarily sit above the 1.5°C threshold in the coming years—an important marker because many climate risks rise quickly between 1.5°C and 2°C of warming. What that means for 2035: even if the world eventually stabilizes temperatures later in the century, the next decade is likely to be lived in a hotter and more volatile climate regime than the one most institutions were built for—schools, hospitals, power grids, farms, and water systems included.

## 2) The Arctic will keep rewriting the map—and the ripple effects won’t stay “up north”

If you want a preview of accelerated change, the Arctic is it. NOAA’s 2025 Arctic Report Card underscored a striking milestone: Arctic winter sea ice hit its lowest annual maximum extent in the 47-year satellite record in March 2025, alongside a longer-term pattern of younger, thinner ice. This matters for 2035 for two reasons:

* **Heat amplification:** Less reflective ice means more dark ocean absorbing sunlight, reinforcing warming.
* **System-level impacts:** Arctic warming influences weather patterns, ocean circulation, coastal erosion, and ecosystems well beyond polar latitudes.

By 2035, “Arctic change” will increasingly be “global change”—showing up in fisheries, shipping risk, climate feedbacks, and coastal planning.

## 3) Sea levels will be higher—and coastal disruption will be more routine

Sea-level rise isn’t a distant-century problem. It’s already measurable year-to-year, and it’s being accelerated by two processes that don’t stop quickly: warming oceans expanding and land ice melting.
